Between Cordilleras

For the second weekend in Peru I went to Huaraz, a city in a valley between Cordillera Blanca and Cordillera Negra. For me it was a first contact with a mountains here. I wanted to see the highest mountains in Peru and get used to the altitude.

Map of our trip to Huaraz

To get to Huaraz we took a bus for 10$ and went 8 hours over night. We didn’t have any special plans, we knew only that there is a lot to see in there and that it is recommended to stay at least 5 days, not for 2, as we planned. In the first day we did a small trekking around the city. We went to el mirador to see a beautiful view of the city. It is possible to see the highest mountain of Peru, but for that time it was too foggy.

Then we walked through very small villages

On the way we met a lot of indians living there in a conditions a bit different than in Lima. In the end we wanted to take a rest in banos termales, but it was already closed:/

In the evening we went to the reestaurant and finally I had a possibility to taste CUYES (guinea pigs)! It tastes a bit like a chicken, but is more delicate. Actually there is not much meat - only small bones and skin. Just look at the photo.

In the second day we decided to go to the higher mountains. We took a trip to Pastoruri, which is a mountain of a 5200 m high, and there is already glacier on it. I wanted to climb to the summit, but it was impossible because of a weather. In this time of the year it is raining (at 5000 it’s snowing already) every afternoon, she main tourist attraction of Pastoruri is a snow itself. For me it was nothing new, but many people saw it for the first time in their life. They made tousands of photos, they played with the snow and even took my sticks to make a picture.

I was a little bit sick because of altitude, but there was not such a big problem, beacause we had a coca leaves and were chewing it all the time. That’s why when we went back to Huaraz we were still fit enough to dance a bit of salsa.
